Best Game Title Ever

The Simpsons' CBG

The currently Japan only Nintendo DS RPG "Item Getter" definitely GETS the Best Game Title of all Time award.

While I haven't played this game (and you know it wont ever make it to western shores without some serious localization) I thought the name deserved some discussion.

In Japan the similarly game-related word "Power-up" is commonly used and readily understood by all demographics (game-fans or not). It means that the subject has been improved or "beefed-up" in some way. "Power-up" is one of those rare cases in which a phrase has the same meaning and context in Japan as it does in the West.

"Get" is used in a slightly different way.

Here are some example:

  • "Item Get." = I got a/the Item.
  • "Charmeleon get" = I captured the Pokemon called Charmeleon.
  • "Melon-pan get" = I got some Melon bread.

As you can see, the subject (I/me) is always implied. It is also implied that the Item being got, is rare or less than common in some way.

Following this structure, we can further mutilate the phrase into a Noun.

  • "Item Getter" (s) = Someone who acquires Items.

For extra flair try using pluralization:

  • "GetBackers" (p) = People who Get things Back from other people.

"Item Getter" is not only a perfectly correct phrase by all the rules of Engrish, it shows an audacious degree of understatement and lack of embellishment. Getting Items is what the game is about.

It's no Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army but it will have to do.
