WTF - Hypercolour Makes a Comeback
blog // Lindsay Stewart
For those of you growing up in the late 80s like me, you probably remember Hypercolour. An early foray mixing technology with fashion, the basic idea involved clothes that changed colour with heat. Hypercolour was a hit with the kids, allowing you to leave hand prints on your friends shirts, and letting everyone know when you were a little sweaty after gym class.
With the 80s revival of late (or the really over the last 4 years), I've been waiting, wondering if, when, hypercolour would make a comeback. When acid-washed jeans arrived, I assumed hypercolour wasn't far behind. I tool awhile, but you guessed it (and I apologize about this especially long WTF rant), but hypercolour is back, and who's pimping it but American Apparel. Now called a Thermochromatic T-shirt, AA has a sexier, more shapely version of the 80s T, but it's hypercolour nonetheless. While the technology that produces the temperature sensitive reaction is undoubtedly better than before, AA is still warning you to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take extra care when washing your "novelty item".
Did you love hypercolour the first time around, and would you wear it now?
