30 Rock: A Not-So-Laidback Ode to Liz Lemon

Are there any other ladies out there in love with Liz Lemon? Stand up and declare yourselves!

Now I'm not talking about Tina Fey, who is also kickass and geeky hot, I mean her 30 Rock character - Liz Lemon. She’s a single woman who impulsively buys a wedding dress, then eats a ham while wearing it, she's also a Star Wars fan, a den mother to a bizarre cast of mentally unstable childlike adults, she's completely inept at relationships (see above - single and buying a wedding dress!), she has a million-dollar view office and a $20 top, and she’s the recipient of a followship award (you read that right, I promise). Liz Lemon is all these things and more, and while she is a complete disaster in many ways, she might just be the most stable character on 30 Rock.

30 Rock has Kenneth (earnest, backwoods hilariousness), Tracy Jordan (the king of catchprases), and Jack Donaghy (thank god Alec Baldwin is finally doing comedy again – Schweddy Balls is still one of the best things to ever come out of SNL), all upstaging Liz Lemon at every turn, but she is the true nucleus of the show, providing it with its geeky heart.

Judge for yourself with this excellent round of Liz Lemon clips:

One of the main reason’s I am so passionate about my girl-crush on Liz Lemon, is that generally I’m not a fan of sitcoms, but 30 Rock changed that for me. It made me like TV again, and I think Tina Fey is truly one of the best leading ladies on TV. The Emmy voters clearly agree, with Fey and the show taking home Best Actress, Best Comedy and Best Writer.

A few other things that make 30 Rock great…
  • Mindgrapes
  • Thoughtsicles
  • When something goes wrong, Liz Lemon says "Blerg"
  • When asked if he likes Phil Collins, Jack Donage replies "I have two ears and a heart don't I" (apologies to all my friends who have had to listed to me recite this when I'm convincing new people to watch the show.)
  • Tracy Jordan's "I love ____ so much, I wanna take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant!"
I must apologize for the very non-laidback Liz Lemon love-fest, but the character is one of my favourite on TV. More than that, 30 Rock is a hilarious, well-written show, something sadly not too common on prime time. Quite earnestly, I think 30 Rock is the best comedy on TV right now, because it is geeky, quirky and accessible. So although I'm sounding fanatical about Liz Lemon and the show in general, we're giving 30 Rock the Laidback Geek stamp of approval. I’ve already set the PVR for October 30th, 30 Rock is the last season premier of the fall TV schedule.

Final Thoughts
When I started writing this post a couple of weeks ago, I was firmly going to post about Liz Lemon, not Tina Fey. I have to add that after seeing Fey as Sarah Palin on SNL a week ago, I could write another whole post on why Tina Fey rocks my world. Apparently I’m not the only one - some are even calling for the Democrats to choose her as Obama’s running mate because she will confuse Republicans and because Tina Fey may even be able to out-Palin Sarah Palin.

So, I say go watch 30 Rock, have a trip down memory lane with old SNL skits or Mean Girls (Fey wrote the script and played a teacher), hell, even go rent Baby Mama, if Tina Fey is in it, I’m there!
